Indian leg-spinner Piyush Chawla has sought an NOC from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to switch to Gujarat for the coming domestic season. The 28- year-old Chawla has 386 first-class wickets in 117 matches but his recent showing in the Ranji Trophy has not been too encouraging. He played only two matches for UP last season and scalped only two wickets.

Emergence of youngsters

With chinaman Kuldeep Yadav in the fray, it isn’t getting any easier for the World Cup winner.  And it has been learned that, apparently, a few disciplinary issues with him in his home state hasn’t made it easy for him either. But in Gujarat, he is being welcomed with both arms. The defending Ranji champions are on the look out for a quality spinner as the team struggles whenever the Indian spinner Axar Patel joins the national set up. They are looking for someone who can mentor the youngsters and make his experience count.

“A bowler with close to 400 first class wickets will be an asset for any side and we are confident his arrival will add value,” said a key member of the Gujarat Cricket Association (GCA). An Uttar Pradesh Cricket Association (UPCA) official confirmed Chawla’s planned migration while the GCA sources are looking forward to welcoming him into the side. Chawla, apart from him a very popular face has switched sides too. India discard Robin Uthappa has moved to Saurashtra while Ambati Rayudu and Pragyan Ojha are homebound – to Hyderabad from Baroda and West Bengal respectively.

It will be interesting to see if Chawla can make an instant impression and get his way into the national set up. Chawla has played 3 Test matches and 25 ODI games so far. He has scalped 7 and 32 wickets respectively. He has also played 7 T20I games and has picked up 4 wickets.
