Australia prevailed victorious in a thrilling first ODI against Sri Lanka in a rain-affected encounter thanks to an outstanding effort by Glenn Maxwell. The Australian team got over the line with two wickets in hand after they were set a revised target of 282 runs in 44 overs as per the D/L method due to rain on June 14 (Tuesday) in Kandy.

The Aussies will be enjoying their close win, but their lack of application against quality spinners has once again come to the fore. Barring their star all-rounder Maxwell, everyone seemed to struggle against the Sri Lankan spin duo of Maheesh Theekshana and Wanindu Hasaranga. Andrew McDonald will also look to assess his middle-order batters’ failure to capitalize on good starts.

Meanwhile, Sri Lanka will feel hard done by the visitors as they were in the driver’s seat after dismissing Alex Carey in the 36th over, but their bowlers were powerless against Maxwell, who was in a punishing mood on the night. Going into the second ODI, the islanders will look for a better performance from their bowlers in the latter overs.

Pitch Conditions

Pallekele will be hosting the second ODI as well, and just like the ODI series opener, the pitch is deemed to assist the slower bowlers more than the pacers. The team winning the toss will likely bat first and make use of the fresh wicket, as chasing a score in the second innings on the slowish track will prove to be tricky.

Playing Combinations for SL vs AUS

Sri Lanka

Although Sri Lanka lost the first match, they will look at the many positives from the game, especially the performance of Hasaranga and Kusal Mendis. Debutant Dunith Wellalage also impressed by picking up two important wickets. They won’t be looking to make any changes to the team that gave a good account of themselves in the first ODI.

Probable XI: Pathum Nissanka, Danuskha Gunathilaka, Kusal Mendis (wk), Dhananjaya de Silva, Dasun Shanaka (c), Charith Asalanka, Wanindu Hasaranga, Chamika Karunaratne, Dushmantha Chameera, Maheesh Theekshana, Dunith Wellalage

Australia

Australia will like to tighten their death bowling as they conceded 86 runs in the last ten overs of their bowling innings. The Men in Yellow might also look to give Mitchell Swepson a chance in the second ODI ahead of one of their pacers, as the pitch will be assisting the spinners.

Probable XI: Aaron Finch (c), David Warner, Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Glenn Maxwell, Marcus Stoinis, Alex Carey (wk), Ashton Agar, Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, Mitchell Swepson
