Sri Lanka made an incredible start to the three-match ODI series, winning the opening match at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo by 91 runs. The fact that it was Lasith Malinga’s last ODI made the victory even sweeter. Bangladesh, on the other hand, didn’t have much to cheer for. At first, southpaw Kusal Perera pummelled them with a ton followed by a clinical show from the Lanka bowlers.
Tamim Iqbal looked a tad clueless in his maiden appearance as the ODI skipper. In their second game, the Tigers can’t afford to be complacent as it’s a must-win affair for them. However, the visitors can take heart from the fact that Malinga won’t be there next time around. The speedster picked up three wickets, conceding 38 runs, in his ODI swansong and helped Lanka defend 314.
Pitch and Conditions
Chasing under the lights in Colombo can be arduous as the ball jags around. Even in the first game, the Lankan batters played their strokes freely in the first-half of the match. Hence, it won’t be a surprise if the teams opt to bat first after winning the toss. Meanwhile, there are decent chances of rain throughout game time. Dew is also expected to play its part.
Team Combinations
Sri Lanka
The Islanders will make one forced change in Malinga’s absence. One of Isuru Udana and Dasun Shanaka is likely to be included. Udana’s chances are higher as he was impressive in the World Cup. Both Shanaka and Udana can wield their willows to good effect and hence their inclusion adds depth to the batting. Other than Malinga’s replacement, Lanka may not tinker with their combination.
Avishka Fernando would want to make amends after throwing his wicket to a loose stroke. Dimuth Karunaratne and Kusal Perera have been in fine form at the top of the order. The rest of the batting looked in good shape as well. In the bowling arena, Nuwan Pradeep got a three-for and he would be keen to carry on with his form. Lahiru Kumara bowled with pace and De Silva bowled accurately as well.
Probable XI
Avishka Fernando, Dimuth Karunaratne (C), Kusal Perera, Kusal Mendis (wk), Angelo Mathews, Lahiru Thirimanne, Thisara Perera, Dhananjaya de Silva, Isuru Udana/Dasun Shanaka, Nuwan Pradeep, Lahiru Kumara
Bangladesh
The void left by Shakib Al Hasan was palpable in the first game. Mohammad Mithun batted at number three and he flattered to deceive. Though the right-hander may get another chance, Anamul Haque Bijoy, who recently plied his trade against Afghanistan A, can be slotted in. Rubel Hossain has looked a pale shadow of his glorious self of late and he may make way for speedster Taskin Ahmed.
Taskin has been waiting in the wings ever since his decent shows in the 2019 BPL. Tamim is awfully short of confidence and that can be comprehended from his poor run with the bat. Soumya Sarkar’s form isn’t something to boast off either. The only positives for Bangladesh from the first game was Mushfiqur Rahim and Sabbir Rahman’s fifties. It’s time for the rest of the batting unit to deliver.
Probable XI
Tamim Iqbal (C), Soumya Sarkar, Mohammad Mithun/Anamul Haque Bijoy, Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), Mahmudullah, Sabbir Rahman, Mosaddek Hossain, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, Shafiul Islam, Rubel Hossain/Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman
