England captain Joe Root has received an official reprimand and one demerit point for breaching the ICC Code of Conduct during the second day’s play in the Pallekele Test against Sri Lanka on Wednesday. Root was found to have violated Article 2.8 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which related to “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during an international match”.

The incident happened in the 76th over of Sri Lanka’s innings when Root appeared to show dissent at umpire Marais Erasmus’ decision by shaking his head and kicking the turf after Dilruwan Perera had been given not-out off Moeen Ali. Root pleaded not guilty to the charge and, as such, a hearing took place after the day’s play following which the match referee found the England captain guilty of dissent as charged and handed him an official reprimand and one demerit point.

The charge was levelled by on-field umpires Erasmus and S. Ravi, third umpire Chris Gaffaney and fourth umpire Ranmore Martinesz.

Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.

Proceedings of the match

As far as the game is concerned, England after a poor effort by the top order it were powered to 285 by Sam Curran who scored another half century coming in at No.8. Sri Lanka produced a pretty strong response as the home team didn’t just surpass the total but also took a handy lead of 46 runs in the first innings. For Sri Lanka as well it was Roshen Silva who scored a fifty and made the difference late in the innings.

England did manage to bowl Sri Lanka out for 336. Before stumps on the second day, the visitors once again walked out to bat. Root made another surprise move by sending in spinner Jack Leach along with the other opener Rory Burns.
