India and Sri Lanka are all set to lock horns in the three-match ODI series starting 18th July. India are without many of their main players, and will be led by Shikhar Dhawan. Sri Lanka too, will have a new skipper in form of Dasun Shanaka. This series will provide opportunity to a lot of new faces from both sides to showcase their talent. The Sri Lankan team has faced a lot of criticism for its recent performance, and would like to put up a good show at home.

Let’s look at important stats and numbers before the start of the ODI series between Sri Lanka and India:

Head to Head – Both teams have played 159 ODIs till now against each other, in which India have won 91 games. On the other hand, Sri Lanka have emerged victorious in 56 matches while 1 ODI was tied.

1997 – The last time Sri Lanka won an ODI series against India was in 1997. Since then, India have won 9 out of 11 bilateral series while two series were drawn.

10 – India have won 10 consecutive bilateral series across formats against Sri Lanka. The last time Sri Lanka won a bilateral series against India was in 2008. Sri Lanka defeated India 2-1 in a Test series at home at that time.

7 – In the last 7 ODIs played at home, Sri Lanka have emerged victorious in each of the match. They would like to continue the winning streak.

23 – Shikhar Dhawan has scored needs 5977 runs in 139 ODI innings so far. He 23 runs to complete 6000 runs in the format. He will be the fourth fastest player to reach the landmark if he achieves the feat in the first match.

5 – Among Indian players, Dhawan will become fifth opener to complete 6000 ODI runs. Before him, Sachin Tendulkar (15310), Sourav Ganguly (9146), Virender Sehwag (7240) and Rohit Sharma (7238) achieved the milestone.

8 – Yuzvendra Chahal has picked up 92 wickets in 54 ODIs so far, and needs eight wickets to complete 100 wickets in the format. He will become quickest Indian spinner to reach the milestone if he takes 8 wickets in the three games, going past Kuldeep Yadav (58 matches).

2018 – India will be playing without two of their main players Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the series. The last time India played an ODI without them was in Asia Cup 2018. India was captained by MS Dhoni in that match against Afghanistan which ended in a tie.

142 – Shikhar Dhawan will be making his ODI captaincy debut after playing 142 games in the format. Only Anil Kumble (217), and Rohit Sharma (171) played more games before leading India for the first time in ODIs.

12 – Bhuvneshwar Kumar has picked up 138 wickets in 117 ODIs, and requires 12 wickets to complete 150 wickets in the format.

17 – Shikhar Dhawan needs 17 runs to complete 1000 ODI runs against Sri Lanka.

1 – At the age of 35 years and 225 days, Shikhar Dhawan will become the oldest Indian cricketer on ODI captaincy debut. Before him, Mohinder Amarnath made his ODI captaincy debut at the age of 34 Years and 37 days against Pakistan in 1984.

5 – Sanju Samson made his T20I debut on 19 July 2015, and is expected to make his ODI debut in the first game. His wait of 5 years and 364 days is the longest for an Indian player to make ODI debut after making T20I debut.

10 – Dasun Shanaka will be the captain of the Sri Lankan team in this series. Since 2017, he will be the 10th ODI captain for Sri Lanka. No other team have used more skippers in the same period.
