Sri Lankan cricket team contributed 1 million to aid flood relief

The Sri Lankan team is currently playing a 3-match Test series against England at Headingley. Before the start of the Test, Sri Lanka was affected by floods due to heavy downpour.

The Sri Lankan cricket team has contributed 1 million Indian rupees for the disaster affected victims through the Cricket Aid program conducted by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). Angelo Mathews, the Sri Lankan skipper through national television expressed his sorrow for the victims and he also posted on social media to spread more awareness on the issue.

Mathews said, “We are shocked and saddened to hear of the floods and landslides. We love you all and our thoughts and prayers are with you,” as mentioned on sundaytimes.com.

The source close to SLC further mentioned, “The team wore black armbands as they opened their tour at the first Test match in honour of those who have lost their lives. The Sri Lanka team, currently playing their first test of the Investec Test Series in UK, have made a donation of Rs. 1 Million to assist in national flood relief efforts through Cricket Aid. Cricket Aid, has commenced immediate relief operations, and is disbursing the funds initially via 500 aid packages containing the following items such as water bottles, bed sheet, undergarments, towel, sanitary napkins, skirts and sarongs and mats”.

For contributions from other places, SLC provided contact details, “Contributions can be dropped off at our collection center — Sri Lanka Cricket, 35, Maitland Place, Colombo 7 and inquiries may be made on 0112681601 or cricketaid@srilankacricket.lk.”

The amount raised by the team will be used for potable water, medical supplies, and other essentials. Sri Lanka team is also wearing black armbands during the 1st Test match.
