Rest of India made a brilliant comeback in the Irani Cup game against the Ranji Champions Mumbai to defeat them by 4 wickets. Mumbai looked to be in driver seat after posting a total of 603 in first innings. Later they did well to restrict the ROI team to just 306 runs to gain a lead of 297 runs. Instead of enforcing follow-on, Mumbai decided to bat again. Some brilliant bowling from the ROI bowlers bundled out Mumbai to just 182 runs.
With help of contributions from every batsman in their batting order, Rest of India emerged as Irani Cup champions by chasing down a mammoth target of 480 when only a couple of overs left in the game and created a record. Here we look at all the stats and records recorded during the game.

0 – Shreyas Iyer’s duck in 2nd innings was his first duck in First Class Cricket. He has played 42 innings in FC before getting out for a duck.
1 – Mumbai became the Indian First Class team to loss after scoring 600+ in first innings of a FC match. In overall, this was the fifth such instance in First Class Cricket. Highest 1st innings total in FC to lose is 642 by Essex vs Glamorgan in 2004.
Australia scoring 556 in 1st innings vs India at Adelaide in 2003 before losing is the previous highest 1st innings total in losing cause in a First Class match related to India.
Considering the First Class matches in India, the previous highest 1st innings total in losing cause was 518/9 dec by Rest of India vs Haryana at Faridabad in 1991 also coming in Irani Trophy.
3 – Number of times Karun Nair has been dismissed in 90s in first class Cricket. All the 3 have come in Irani Cup.
6 – Mumbai top 6 batsmen scored fifties. This was the first instance in Irani Cup where all the top 6 batsmen scored fifty plus scores in an innings.
8 – Number of consecutive losses for Mumbai in Irani Cup. They last won the tournament was in 1997-98.
39 – Number of outright losses Mumbai have faced out of the 538 First Class matches they have faced so far. 11 outright losses came against Rest of India. Next most was 4 against Baroda.
90 – Karun Nair became the first batsman to be dismissed in 90s in both innings of an Irani Cup game. He scored 94 and 92 respectively.
193 – Partnership stand of 193 runs for opening wicket in Mumbai’s first innings between Akhil Herwadkar & Jay Bista is the highest for any team against Rest of India in Irani Cup. Previous highest was 164 between Delhi pair Manu Nayyar and Rajiv Vinayak in 1989.
297 – Lead conceded by ROI in first innings. This is the highest 1st innings deficit over conceded by a team to end on winning side in a FC match held in India. Previous highest 1st innings deficit was 274 by India vs Australia in 2001 at Eden Gardens.
480 – Target chased down by ROI. This is the 10th highest successful run chase and highest in Indian FC Cricket. This is also the highest successful run chase in Irani Trophy. Previous highest was 421 which was also by Rest of India vs Delhi in 1982 at Delhi.
Only twice a team managed to chase down more than 480 in Indian FC Cricket. 536 by West Zone vs South Zone in 2010 and 501 by South Zone vs England A in 2005 were the 2 instances.
482 – ROI’s total of 482/6 is the highest total in 2nd innings of a team in the match in Irani Cup. Previous highest was 485 by ROI vs Mumbai in 1981.
1573 – Aggregate of runs scored during this Irani Cup match. This is the 3rd highest aggregated game in Irani Cup history. 1749 runs between Mumbai and ROI in 2010 and 1630 between Rajasthan and ROI in 2011 are the highest aggregated Irani Cup matches. Interestingly, both of those were hosted by Jaipur.
