Having lost the Test series, the Indian team were not considered to be firm favorites in the ODI setup. However, with the kind of approach they have shown in the series thus far, the history seems to be awaiting them. One man who has been key to their success is their captain Virat Kohli.
Virat has hammered two tons in the three matches played in the 6-match series thus far. He has already taken his series aggregate of runs over the 300-run mark. With the effort, Kohli has topped the charts for most 300 plus runs in a bilateral ODI series on most occasions. Kohli has achieved this feat on a record 6 times. In the ongoing series, he had smashed a brilliant 112 in the first ODI in Durban.
His masterclass knock had helped the Indian team register their first ever win at the venue. In the second game, which was a low scoring one for the hosts, Kohli scored an unbeaten 46 as he saw his team get over the line yet again. And now, in the third ODI of the series, he scored an unbeaten 160 off 159 deliveries. This was his 34th ODI ton and a record 12th ODI ton as the captain of the Indian team.
Coming back to the list of players with 300 plus runs in a bilateral ODI series on most occasions, there are three cricketers who closely follow Virat Kohli in the list. All these three gentlemen have achieved the feat on four occasions each. Former team India captain Rahul Dravid has scored in excess of 300 runs in a bilateral series on four occasions.
Also, a player from India’s current opposition, Quinton de Kock has achieved the feat four times. One of the occasions is etched in the memories of the Indian fans for sure. When the two sides had last met in a bilateral ODI series, Quinton de Kock had hammered three consecutive tons in three outings. Also in the list is Rohit Sharma of team India. Well, Rohit’s number could be credited to his three stellar double tons in the ODI format of the game.
