Afghanistan’s glorious record in the T20I format continues as they bagged their 2nd straight win in the T20I Tri-Series in Bangladesh. They defeated the hosts by 25 runs in Dhaka to seal their position on the top of the table. Mohammad Nabi’s unbeaten 84 off only 54 balls pushed team’s total to 164/6 after they lost four wickets in the powerplay. Later, Mujeeb ur Rahman sealed a comfortable win for the Afghans with his maiden 4-wicket haul while opening the bowling.
Mujeeb, who made his T20I debut in 2018 has featured in 11 matches thus far and was part of the winning team in all the 11. Only one player has seen a 100% win record in T20I format playing in more matches. Fareed Ahmad of Afghanistan featured in 13 T20Is since 2016 finished on winning side in all those. The victory over Bangladesh was Afghanistan’s 12th consecutive win in the T20I format and their 21st successive T20I win in the matches they played in Asia.
Afghanistan thus bettered their own record winning streak of 11 matches between 2016 and 2017. Their streak began with the win against West Indies in the 2016 WT20 and was halted by the same Windies team by 3-0 whitewash at home in June 2017. No other team has even won ten matches in a succession in Men’s T20I cricket. Pakistan’s 9 consecutive wins in 2018 stands as the best winning streak in T20Is for any team other than Afghanistan. England were the first to win 8 in a row and were equaled by Ireland later in 2012.
