It needed an inspired effort from the Zimbabwe side to break the 300-run chase barrier in the ODI format on Sri Lankan soil. This win also unlocked an achievement in Sri Lankan history as their captain Angelo Mathews became the first to lose an ODI against 9 different full member nations. In fact, Mathews was the 2nd Sri Lankan captain to lose an ODI against 9 different teams after Sanath Jayasuriya.
However, Jayasuriya led Sri Lanka in their loss against Kenya, which was more damaging than Mathews’ unwanted record as that was a World Cup match. Excluding the new full member nations Afghanistan and Ireland, there are only 5 captains from the Test playing nations who have lost an ODI against remaining 9 counties.
Captains from full member nations lose an ODI against remaining full member countries:
Captain | Country | Span of losing to 1st country and 9th country |
Sourav Ganguly | India | 1999-2004 |
Heath Streak | Zimbabwe | 2000-2004 |
Shakib Al Hasan | Bangladesh | 2009-2011 |
Kane Williamson | New Zealand | 2012-2017 |
Angelo Mathews | Sri Lanka | 2012-2017 |
Considering Afghanistan and Ireland in the full member nations list, the Ireland captain William Porterfield remains the only player to lead his side to a loss in an ODI against remaining 11 full member countries. Elton Chigumbura comes close to Porterfield as Zimbabwe lost against 10 full member countries under him except against England. Kenya’s Steven Tikolo and Porterfield are the only captains to lose an ODI against the first 10 full member nations with Tikolo almost recording an ODI loss against all full member nations including the two latest entries but missed out against Afghanistan before he retired.

Porterfield is just behind Tikolo as he led Ireland in ODIs against 13 countries who beat them. Sourav Ganguly and Mohammad Nabi have lost to 11 different teams as captain with Ganguly’s tally includes ICC World XI which was in the Tsunami appeal game while leading Asia XI.
