Stats: Fastest 200 plus run chases in T20 cricket

Northern Knights became the fastest team to chase down the total in excess of 200 runs in the history of T20 cricket in the ongoing Super Smash tournament. It was the 23rd match of the competition between Northern Knights and Auckland Aces in the domestic T20 in New Zealand. Auckland side, batting first, posted 202 runs in 20 overs thanks to Mark Chapman and Sam Curran who blunted the bowling attack brutally.

In response, Knights lost Tim Siefert and the captain Dean Brownlie cheaply but the other opener Anton Devcich launched an assault from the other end. He was joined by Daniel Flynn as they added 71 runs in just 32 deliveries. While Devcich was dismissed for 76 off just 37 deliveries, Daryl Mitchell joined in the fun. The match was finished in just 16.5 overs as Flynn smashed 58 off 30 deliveries and Mitchell scored 50 off just 22 balls. As many as 13 sixes were hit in the innings as they gunned down the target with ease.

Which other teams have done it?

Northern Knights have become the fastest team now chasing 200-plus total breaking the record of Delhi Daredevils who had chased 214 against Gujarat Lions in the last edition of Indian Premier League (IPL). Earlier, it was South Africa who held the record by gunning down the target of 206 against Windies way back in 2007 during the inaugural edition of ICC World T20.

However, in the list, the highest score is chased by Somerset in the match against Hampshire in 2010. They had chased a score of a mammoth 217 runs in just 18 overs. Kings XI Punjab has also done it against Kolkata Knight Riders in the same year chasing down 201 with 10 balls to spare. Though the victory of Northern Knights side is special considering the fact that they have gunned down the total with a whopping 23 balls left.

The format is surely entertaining the crowd ever since it has been invented and such chases are only helping the cause of it.
