Less than a month after completing his 9th year in International cricket, Virat Kohli has equalled Ricky Ponting’s ODI century’s tally. The former Australian captain owned 30 centuries in his ODI career having played 365 innings while Kohli scored the same number of tons in half the innings – 186. The Indian skipper now stands only behind Sachin Tendulkar in the list of most ODI hundreds; Tendulkar has 49 hundred to his name in this format.

Kohli scored centuries in the last two game of the 5-match ODI series in Sri Lanka which took his tally of hundreds to 30. The 28-year-old now has scored 22 ODI tons in the bilateral fixtures going past Amla’s 21 centuries. His numbers have touched the peak in the last two years as he averages 92.42 with the next best being his teammate Rohit Sharma, who is substantially behind Kohli with an average of 68.82. Kohli also became the first player to aggregate 1000 runs in ODIs in 2017 as the Indian captain has scored 1017 runs at an average of 92.45 in the 18 ODIs played so far.

His recent form ensured him the highest rating in the ICC ODI rankings with 887 rating points; he went past his previous best of 886 that he had attained during the Asia Cup 2014. This also increased the deficit between him and the world No.2 David Warner (861) to 26 points. With the current rating, Kohli equalled Tendulkar’s career best rating of 887, which the latter reached in the trend setting year of 1998 as the master blaster aggregated 1894 runs in just 34 ODIs in that year.

Since the start of 1999, only AB de Villiers and Hashim Amla equalled or surpassed Sachin’s 887 ratings before Kohli. The South African players have touched the 900 rating points recording their best is 902 and 901 rating points respectively. Rohit, who has shown some consistency recently, also achieved his career best rating of 773 points following his 13th ODI century in the 4th ODI against the Lankans.
