There was a time when anything above 300 was considered a match-winning total and even for a long time in the 21st century, that was the case. But with the various changes that took place in the gentlemen’s game, no total posted by the batting team keeps them on the safer side. It’s the fearlessness and innovativeness brought into the game by T20 cricket, which made a huge difference in the last decade or so.
On 14 occasions in 2017, teams went past the 350 mark in their 50 overs, which indeed is staggering. Out of those four, India breached that mark on four occasions, which also speaks volumes of this side’s caliber. South Africa stands second in this prospect, with 3 scores of 350 or more and it’s barely surprising to see them achieve this feat.
The Rohit Sharma onslaught at Mohali, which eventually brought up his 3rd double-hundred in ODI cricket, propelled his side to a humongous 392. That tops the charts for this calendar year amongst all the team totals. Indian batters went berserk in the final few overs, especially Rohit Sharma. This helped him notch a memorable double ton and eventually, the interim skipper helped his side score 392.
A year of gigantic totals
South Africa‘s 384-run total stands against Sri Lanka stands second in this list. Quinton de Kock and Hashim Amla bludgeoned centuries and that helped them annihilate the already wounded Islanders from the sub-continent.
Yuvraj Singh and MS Dhoni’s unforgettable and vintage show at Cuttack helped India post 381, which happens to be the third best. The uncrowned King of Indian cricket, Yuvraj Singh smashed his first century in 6 years and it was quite an emotional moment for everyone. MS Dhoni and Yuvraj stitched an outstanding partnership for the fourth wicket, which people will not forget for a long time to come.
The other totals in this elite list coming from India came against England and Sri Lanka. Chasing down a 350+ total against England, Kedar Jadhav and Virat Kohli spanked centuries to helped them condense the big total. It was Virat Kohli once again playing a big part in helping India post 375 against Sri Lanka at Colombo.
The other two totals from South Africa in the list came on their home turf as well. Barring India’s 375 against Sri Lanka and England’s 366 at Cuttack against India, all the other total were registered by the hosts. This is one stat the Indians will be wary of before traveling to South Africa.
England is on the list twice whereas Australia’s 369 against Pakistan earns them a slot in the list. Here’s the list of the top 10 highest team totals in 2017.
