The 2017 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) came to a fitting end with a thrilling finale. It was a season full of closely contested matches and hence it was only befitting to see the final match go down the wire until the very last ball on the day. Mumbai Indians successfully defended 129 runs that they posted on the board. Rising Pune Supergiant, despite being in full flow of the run chase, fell short by 1 run.

A superlative spell of bowling from the Mumbai Indians bowlers helped them eke out the narrow win to lift the coveted silverware. Interestingly, it was the 8th occasion when a team registered a one run win in the history of the tournament. The first team to have ever achieved this was Kings XI Punjab.

KXIP had beaten the Mumbai Indians by 1 run at Mumbai in the inaugural edition of the tournament. The same team of KXIP managed to be the second team to have registered a 1 run win in the IPL again. They beat the Deccan Chargers at Johannesburg in the 2009 edition of the tournament.

In the 2016 edition of the IPL, there were 2 instances of 1 run wins. The Gujarat Lions had defeated the Delhi Daredevils by a run after having scored 172 in their innings. In the same season, Royal Challengers Bangalore pipped the Kings XI Punjab by a run a week later.

In all, two teams have registered one run wins on two occasions in the IPL – Mumbai Indians and the Kings XI Punjab. Interestingly, the date of May 21 has seen two one-run wins in the history of the tournament.
