Stats: Kumar Sangakkara completes 100 centuries in professional cricket

Kumar Sangakkara, who has been commentating during the Champions Trophy turned up for his County side Surrey on the non-match day and smashed a century in the quarter-final of the Royal London One-day Cup against Yorkshire at the Leeds.

This was the 100th century for Kumar Sangakkara in his professional cricket career putting him an elite list of 37 players and only the 3rd from Asia after Pakistan’s Zaheer Abbas and India’s Sachin Tendulkar. The list of 37 players with 100 centuries in career includes 24 players from England, 7 from Australia, three from West Indies and one each from New Zealand, Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka.

Sangakkara struck a run-a-ball century with the help of 9 fours and 4 sixes before getting stumped in the 43rd over. Damage was already done to Yorkshire as Sangakkara took his side from 70/3 to 250/4 with help of Ben Foakes adding 180 runs in 175 balls for the 4th wicket.

This was the 2nd consecutive century for Sangakkara in List A games as he scored an unbeaten 124 vs Hampshire last month. Just before joining the commentary team for CT, Sangakkara hit 5 centuries in 5 first-class innings and closely missed on the record 6th consecutive ton.

The Lankan legend has 61 centuries by his name in first-class cricket and this century was his 39th in List A cricket. He has scored 7 centuries across formats in this season but he might not add more tons to his tally since he will be retiring from first-class cricket with the conclusions of this County season.

Sangakkara’s 39th List A century puts him at the 5th position in the list of players with most tons in this format. If he manages to play the format couple of years more, he can end up at 2nd standing only behind Sachin Tendulkar who has 60 List A tons.
