Stats: Players and captains with most Test appearances against Australia without a win

Facing Australia for only the 5th time in Test cricket and the first time since 2006, Bangladesh registered their maiden win against the Aussies with a close 20-run margin in the first Test match at Dhaka. The 11-year gap between two Bangladesh-Australia Tests was so long that none of the eleven Bangladesh players have ever faced Australia in Test cricket. In fact, none of the players in either squad featured in the previous four Bangladesh-Australia Test matches.

The eleven Bangladeshis turned out to be first time lucky against Australia as many of the legends previously have failed to register a win against the mighty Aussie team in this format. The former New Zealand all-rounder Daniel Vettori played 19 Test matches against Australia and didn’t manage to win one.

The list of players with most matches against Australia without a win includes most names from New Zealand and Sri Lanka. The Kiwis have won just once against Australia since 1994 while the Lankans had only one Test win against the Aussies prior to clean sweeping them at home last year.

The list includes big names like Kumar Sangakkara and Shaun Pollock, who are among the leading run-getters and wicket-takers respectively in the Test cricket never tasted a Test win against Australia.

The Bangladesh captain Mushfiqur Rahim achieved something which many other well-known captains in Test history failed to do – a Test win against Australia. Mushfiqur, who was leading his team for the first time in a Test against Australia registered a win which someone like Stephen Fleming failed to achieve in 14 attempts. England’s Graham Gooch and Sri Lanka’s Arjuna Ranatunga led their sides in eight and seven matches respectively against Australia without any success.
