The performances of the captains were one of the main reasons for the T20I series between South Africa and England be an exciting high-scoring series. Quinton de Kock showed a different style of play as he was overaggressive in all three matches helping the hosts get a good start every time.

He struck 8 sixes during the Durban T20I in only 22 balls he faced for scoring 67. Eoin Morgan, on the other hand, was a bit restrictive in taking chances in the first two matches. However, he scored an unbeaten 22-ball 57 in the decider match smashing seven sixes to take his team to a series victory.

All the major stats and numbers recorded by Quinton de Kock and Eoin Morgan during the T20I series:

1 – Quinton de Kock’s 17-ball fifty during the Durban game was the fastest T20I fifty for South Africa and also the fastest fifty by a captain in the T20I format. Eoin Morgan’s 21-ball fifty in Centurion was the fastest T20I fifty for England as Morgan himself scored a fifty off 21 balls against New Zealand last year.


3 – As many as three half-centuries were recorded by the two captains in this series – Eoin Morgan (2) and Quinton de Kock (1). These are the joint-most fifty-plus scores in a Men’s T20I bilateral series. IND-SA series in September 2019, AUS-PAK series in November 2019, IND-WI series in December 2019 and the recent NZ-IND series recorded three 50+ scores by captains.


7 – Eoin Morgan now has seven half-centuries as captain in T20I victories; the joint-most fifty-plus scores for a captain in T20I wins in Men’s cricket. Rohit Sharma also has seven 50+ scores as captain in T20I wins.

Overall, Morgan has 8 T20I fifties as captain with the fifty in the 1st game of this series been the only one resulting in a defeat. Kane Williamson (9), Faf du Plessis (8) and Virat Kohli (8) are the other captains with 8 or more fifty-plus scores in Men’s T20I cricket.


7 – Morgan struck a total of seven sixes during the 3rd T20I in Centurion; the joint-most sixes struck in a T20I innings for England. Ravi Bopara in 2014 and Jason Roy in 2018 hit 7 sixes in a T20I inning while Morgan struck exactly 7 sixes in a T20I inning on four instances including this match.


14 – Quinton de Kock smashed 14 sixes during this series; the 2nd most number of sixes in a T20I series/tournament for South Africa. Richard Levi hit a total of 15 sixes during the 3-match T20I series in New Zealand in 2012.


14 – De Kock’s 14 sixes in the series are also the most by a captain in a bilateral T20I series in Men’s cricket. The highest is 15 maximums by Eoin Morgan during last year’s 5-match T20I series in New Zealand.


23 – De Kock (14) and Morgan (9) collectively struck 23 sixes in this series; the joint-most number of sixes in a bilateral T20I series by captains. The recent 3-match T20I series between India and West Indies witnessed 23 sixes hit by the skippers of both teams.


214.75 – De Kock scored 131 runs in this series at a strike rate of 214.75; the 2nd highest strike rate in a T20I series/tournament for South Africa. (Min: 50 balls) The highest is 229.09 by David Miller during the home T20I series against Bangladesh in 2017. Overall, De Kock’s SR of 214.75 is the 8th highest for a player in a Men’s T20I series/tournament.


267 – A total of 267 runs were aggregated by captains in this series – Eoin Morgan (136 runs) and Quinton de Kock (131 runs). These are the joint 2nd most runs aggregated by captains in a 3-match T20I series.

Virat Kohli and Kieron Pollard collectively scored 288 runs during the IND-WI series during December 2019. The 3-match T20I series in 2016 between Australia and India also witnessed 267 runs scored by captains.
