New Zealand all-rounder Colin De Grandhomme was the latest entree to the list of New Zealand batsmen who took the least deliveries to get to their hundred. The lanky all-rounder scored a 71-ball century in the on-going Test match against the visiting Windies side.
This century is also the fastest that any batsman has scored against the Windies. Previously, the record was jointly held by Pakistan’s explosive batsman Shahid Afridi and India’s swashbuckling opener Virender Sehwag. The duo took a total of 78 balls to get to their respective centuries against West Indies in Bridgetown and Gros Islet respectively.
However, the fastest to a Test century record is still held intact by the former Kiwi opener Brendon McCullum. The right-handed opener scored a century against Australia in Christchurch back in 2015/16 in just 54 deliveries.
Who’s next on the list?
It is the quickest that a batsman has got to the triple figures in the history of the game, with Sir Vivian Richards 56 delivery century coming second.Former Pakistan skipper and right-handed batsman Misbah-ul-Haq is tied with Sir Viv in the third place, scoring his century against Australia in as many deliveries as Sir.
The Kiwi all-rounder Grandhomme is the latest entree to the list at 10th place, tied with Windies Roy Fredericks, who scored a 71 ball century against Australia in Perth way back in 1975/76. Also on the list is Australia’s Adam Gilchrist and David Warner alongside Jack Gregory.
Gilchrist gets his name on the list
While Gilchrist knocked a 57-ball century against England at Perth a decade ago in 06/07, Warner’s knock came in the series against India where he took 69 deliveries to get to triple figures.
Alongside the explosive Chris Gayle in the list, also exists the elegant Shivnarine Chanderpaul. While Chanderpaul only took 69 deliveries to a century against Australia in Georgetown, the Jamaican took a delivery extra to get to the landmark figure against Australia 8 years later.
