Stats: Virat Kohli completes 1000 Test runs in Australia

All the talks surrounding India’s tour of Australia have been around Virat Kohli who is reckoned as the best batsman across all formats at the moment. However, Kohli made only three runs before getting out to Pat Cummins in the first innings of the ongoing Adelaide Test. The Indian skipper started solidly in the second innings after his team gained a 15-run first innings lead by bowling out the hosts for just 235.

Kohli, when on five in this second essay, completed 1000 Test runs in Australia. He has over 1000 Test runs in only India (3105) and Australia thus far. He reached the milestone of 1000 Test runs in Australia in only 18 innings. In the eight matches he has played on the previous tours, Kohli scored five centuries including three at the Adelaide Oval. This ground in Adelaide also witnessed first of his many Test tons and was the venue for his first ever Test match as Indian captain.

He would have reached the milestone in the first innings if he had made eight instead of only three runs. Thus he became only the 5th Indian to aggregate 1000 Test runs in Australia and the fastest among the four. Sachin Tendulkar (22 innings), VVS Laxman (19 innings), Rahul Dravid (25 innings) and Virender Sehwag (22 innings) are the previous three Indians to achieve this feat. Sehwag has only 948 runs across 20 innings in Australia for India but scored 83 runs in 2005 Super Test while playing for ICC World XI.

By completing 1000 Test runs in Australia in only 18 innings, Kohli became the joint fifth fastest visiting player to achieve this milestone. Wally Hammond holds the record for being the fastest to 1000 Test runs in Australia among visiting players taking only ten innings. As many as six players including Kohli have accomplished the milestone in 18 or fewer innings out of which five others are from England.
