Stephen Fleming shows keenness to coach New Zealand T20I side

The former New Zealand skipper believes that he is the right man for the coaching job.

Stephen Fleming was among the most skilled cricketers of his generation for New Zealand. He had been a prolific run scorer for the Kiwis and also led the side with authority. The former Kiwi skipper has also successfully plied his trade as a coach. He has mentored also mentored the Chennai Super Kings and the Rising Pune Supergiants in the Indian Premier League.

Recently, Simon Doull, the former New Zealand pacer, called for changes in the leadership and coaching panel in the T20 format. The current commentator wants Kane Williamson and Mike Hesson to be replaced as the skipper and the coach. Following Doull’s comments, Fleming has expressed his desire to coach the national team in the T20 format.

Fleming’s passion for New Zealand cricket

The former Black Cap highlighted his affinity with New Zealand cricket in a recent interaction with the media. “It’s based on my passion and love for New Zealand cricket. I’ve got a very good relationship with Craig McMillan [the current batting coach] and spend a lot of time talking to him about where the game is going and what he sees. So I enjoy passing on that knowledge, and it comes back to wanting the New Zealand team to be strong,” Fleming was quoted as saying by Trackside Radio.

Fleming also mentioned about the significance of having a strong national team who can perform across the globe. “I enjoy going away and having a strong New Zealand team performing well around the world, it helps my job, and I enjoy getting the New Zealand players in the sides that I’ve got,” he added. The 44-year old is currently the mentor of two teams.

He has been associated with the Chennai Super Sings for the opening eight seasons with skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni. Following CSK’s two-year suspension, he moved to the Pune franchise, which also involved MSD. He has recently been reappointed as Chennai’s coach for the upcoming season of the IPL. Fleming is also the mentor of the Melbourne Stars team in the Big Bash League.
