Steve Smith hasn’t had the most auspicious times in international cricket. He admitted having been involved in the shambolic ball-tampering incident following which he had been handed a ban of one year by Cricket Australia. He, along with David Warner and Cameron Bancroft, was asked to leave South Africa with immediate effect.

Thereafter the suspended skipper attended a press conference where he broke down and apologized for his wrongdoing. The New South Wales-born cricketer is currently in New York, trying to evade the wrath of the media back home. Meanwhile, the ousted player might be considered for the role of commentary by Fox Sports as per reports in dailymail.co.uk.

“We should stand by him”- Patrick Delany

While several brands have discontinued their association with Steve Smith, the sports broadcaster have extended their support for Smith “When it happened we all got together and said we’ve known Steve for a long time. He’s been on our books for many years and we should stand by him,”  Patrick Delany, the CEO of Fox Sports was quoted as saying in a recent media interaction.

Recently, Channel Seven and Fox Sports secured a contract for A$ 1.3 billion for broadcasting domestic and international cricket for six years. However, the commentary panel is yet to be decided “All I know is our team will look young and inclusive. But there’s nothing wrong with a bit of grey hair in that. Never underestimate the power of wisdom. We’re not ruling out anyone,” the CEO added.

Apart from the suspension, Steve Smith has also been barred from captaining the Australian team for the next couple of years. Nevertheless, the commentary stint is likely to give him some breathing space, provided he gets selected for the role. Smith is currently the top-ranked batsman in Test cricket.
