Steve Waugh raises alarm over Australia’s reliance on Steve Smith: One of the best Australian batsmen and captain of all time Steve Waugh is in Melbourne to be around the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015. While he is here the media caught up with the former skipper about the chance he gives this Australian team which is also hosting the world cup 2015. Waugh said they do have a fair chance of winning the tournament but also warned the team against being overly dependent on Steve Smith as he might not be able to carry on the form for every match.

Cricket is a game of highs and lows and you never know when all of a sudden in midst of a purple patch form might elude you. And if the player in discussion is the one that the team relies on the most, it could well affect their momentum and balance.

On similar equations Warne told News Corp, “He has had an exceptional start and you have to remember that sport is ups and downs, “You will not always be scoring runs or winning as a captain. We don’t want to be too carried away with what he has been doing, but he’s led with incredible maturity for a young guy.”

Steve Smith was carrying the form of his life when Mitchael Clarke went down to a career threatening hamstring injury after which the earlier was declared the test captain of the Australian team. He handled the job exceptionally well and rather excelled with the bat.

Having hit four hundreds in as many test matches in the Border Gavaskar Trophy Smith guided the Kangaroos to a 2-0 victory over India and continued ripe form even in the shorter format. But come the ICC world cup 2015 warm ups and he has been nowhere near the form Australia expect him to be in. This is what is Steve Waugh trying to warn his team about, though they are a versatile lot but the point that the former skipper is making is every bit valid.

Australia is scheduled to clash with England at Melbourne in the World Cup 2015 opener on the 14th of February, 2015 a Valentine’s Day clash will have everything except love.
