Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir has once again come under the scanner for allegedly taking a jibe at MS Dhoni.  The cricketer-turned-politician is known to speak his mind and he doesn’t hold back in making controversial statements either. On multiple occasions in the past, Gambhir has criticized Dhoni for multiple reasons. In the latest turn of events, the southpaw allegedly questioned Dhoni’s hitting skills, calling him a ‘so-called finisher.’

It all happened during the recently-concluded IPL 2021 match between Kolkata Knight Riders and Punjab Kings in Dubai. Gambhir, who was part of the commentary panel, was opining on the role of finishers. Hailing Virat Kohli the best finisher in the last couple of years, the veteran asserted the RCB skipper has better stats than “so-called finishers.”

Did Gautam Gambhir take a dig at MS Dhoni?

“(Andre) Russell being called as a finisher. Virat Kohli has been the best finisher in the last couple of years, and he batted number 3. So just by giving people this term of ‘finisher’ doesn’t make them a finisher. Compare Virat Kohli scoring the run in comparision of the so-called finishers,” Gambhir said on Star Sports.

Although Gambhir didn’t take Dhoni’s name, fans were sure the southpaw has taken a dig at the CSK skipper. After all, the wicketkeeper batter is widely hailed as one of the best finishers to have graced the game. His impetus in the latter part of the innings has given nightmares to many bowling line-ups. However, the former Indian captain has been far away from his best in the ongoing IPL 2021.

In 11 matches, the 40-year-old has scored just 66 runs with his average and strike rate being just a tad over 10 and 110 respectively. These numbers have been far from impressive. Hence, fans believe Gambhir has targeted the veteran player for his poor form.

Meanwhile, Dhoni’s mediocre show with the bat hasn’t hurt CSK much. With nine wins in the first 11 games, the three-time champions have already secured a place in the playoffs and are now eyeing to finish among the top two. After all, it will give them an additional chance to secure a place in the playoffs.

Meanwhile, let’s look at how Twitterati reacted to Gautam Gambhir’s statement:
