Veteran Indian opener Rohit Sharma will miss the upcoming three-match Test series against South Africa due to a hamstring injury. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed the major development on Monday (December 13) and named uncapped batter Priyank Panchal as his replacement. Notably, Rohit has joined the long list of Indian players unavailable due to injuries.

Ravindra Jadeja, Shubman Gill, and Axar Patel are the other Test regulars, who’ll give this series a miss due to fitness issues. As Rohit has been a vital part of the Test team lately, his absence is expected to cost India big time. After all, the tracks in the rainbow nation are known to favour fast bowlers and in the Proteas side has some world-class pacers in Anrich Nortje, Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi.

Rohit Sharma to miss yet another overseas Test series

For the unversed, the 34-year-old sustained the hamstring injury during a practice session in Mumbai. He will now be out of action for three weeks to recuperate from his injury. With Rohit being one of the finest openers going around, speedy-recovery messages poured in for him as soon as BCCI revealed the major news.

However, a section of netizens trolled the veteran batter, highlighting his knack of sustaining injuries ahead of overseas Test series. Notably, Rohit had missed some important overseas Test series in his career due to injuries. As tackling the red cherry in foreign conditions is challenging for openers, netizens have been joking about his knack of developing ways to get injured ahead of important tours.

Meanwhile, the Test series is set to get underway on December 26 with the Boxing-Day Test taking place at the SuperSport Park in Centurion. Having dominated Australia and England earlier this year, Virat Kohli’s men would be confident ahead of this series. However, the long list of injured players might out them in a spot of bother.
