Team India is looking favourites to seal the two-match Test series against Windies by 2-0and apart from a few sessions, the hosts have dominated the proceedings. They found a young opener in Prithvi Shaw who has lived up to all the hype and batted as he belonged to the international arena for a long time in Rajkot and just continued in the same vein in Hyderabad as well notching up 70 runs without much fuss. His authoritative batting has impressed many cricketing greats and Sunil Gavaskar is no exception to it.
While Gavaskar admitted to the fact that the wonder kid is likely to struggle in the upcoming Australia tour. The bouncier wickets might not suit his technique of punching on the backfoot by opening the face of the bat. But the former cricketer also felt that Shaw will be prepared to take on the heat Down Under and will only improve as he plays more in the near future.
“Prithvi Shaw is the person to take Indian cricket forward in the next 5-10 years. Australia is certainly going to be slightly different, as he has this tendency to open the face of the bat when he plays on the back foot. On bouncier pitches, he might be a bit vulnerable in the gully, third man area,” he said while speaking to India Today.
He is someone who thinks centuries
Sunil Gavaskar also liked Prithvi Shaw’s attitude of trying to make a big score every time he bats. He went on to point one of the encouraging aspects of the youngster’s technique as well and was overawed at the talent he possesses so early in his career.
“Prithvi is someone who thinks centuries, you need such players who want centuries. He is a young man and with experience, he will pace the innings and not be in a rush to reach a landmark. But the way he was playing of the back foot and even defending off the back foot, that is a very encouraging sight,” Gavaskar added.
