Former Indian cricketer Sunil Gavaskar has come up with words of wisdom for the struggling KL Rahul. The elegant Indian opener has been trying hard to strike form in the recent times. Rahul had a rough run of form in England too, but he managed to pull things back with a brilliant ton in the final Test of the tour. Coming to Australia, he has been under the pump, and the first Test in Adelaide did not quite go his way.

He struggled in the first innings, and could score 44 in the second. Commenting on KL Rahul, Sunil Gavaskar reckoned that the batter perhaps tried to hit his way out of form. His desperation to score runs was evident and Gavaskar rightly mentioned that these tricks might work in white ball cricket, but they do not yield good results all the time in Test cricket.

“It did feel that he was trying to hit his way out of form. Even in the knock that he played at The Oval [England], that’s the way he began his knock – by taking a swipe at anything outside off stump,” Sunil Gavaskar quoted as per the quotes in India Today.

“He did manage to spread the field because of that but one got a feeling that he was thinking to himself, I haven’t been getting many runs, let’s find a new way and so the attacking shots. In Test cricket, such a game where you are trying to hit everything in the air does not succeed very often,” Gavaskar said further.

Confidence from the second innings

On a positive note, Sunil Gavaskar hopes that the knock Rahul played in the second innings will help him. With Prithvi Shaw not likely to be fit for the Perth Test, Gavaskar tips the opening pair of Murali Vijay and KL Rahul to come up with improved performances in the next game.

“In the 44-run knock at Adelaide, he did leave quite a few deliveries alone. So did Murali Vijay, which was admirable. Vijay has been a good player. I hope Rahul will have a little more confidence in himself now after this 44. With Prithvi Shaw unlikely to be fit for the Perth Test, we should play with the same opening combination,” the former Indian cricketer cited.
