Former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar was under the scrutiny of the new rules of the Indian cricket board. After the Lodha Committee made its recommendations to the BCCI, the players and officials were forced to abide by the conflict of interest rules. As per the rules, a player or official could only hold one position in regard to the game.

This was the very reason why Rahul Dravid had to quit as the mentor of the Delhi Daredevils before taking up the coaching role of the India A side. Now, Sunil Gavaskar was in a similar state wherein he had to pick between being a commentator or continue his sports management company Professional Management Group (PMG). PMG was formed by Sunil Gavaskar in the year 1985.

The sports management company is currently managing three cricketers – Shikhar Dhawan, Rishabh Pant, and Sarfraz Khan. In order to ensure that Gavaskar gets the best of both worlds, PMG has decided to shut down the player management wing. As per the quotes in Indian Express, Gavaskar maintained his point that he never had conflict of interest.

“I do not have a conflict of interest. Show me one instance where I have tried to influence the selection committee. It’s baffling to find my integrity has been questioned,” quoted Sunil Gavaskar.

Concentrate on other business

Meanwhile, the COO of the PMG group mentioned that the company is now keen on focusing on other businesses now. He maintained that Sunil will continue to be the chairman of the PMG group. Meanwhile, Naushad Khan, father of Sarfraz Khan, mentioned that they were told about the issue and they quickly signed up the documents that PMG sent them regarding termination of services.

“PMG has decided to concentrate on other part of the business. We were looking digital and creating IPs (intellectual properties). The focus has been shifted from player management to other parts of the business so we decided to terminate the contract. Other things will continue. He (Gavaskar) is the chairman of PMG. The basic part is PMG is now out of player management business,” Chief Operating Officer of PMG, Melroy D’Souza quoted.

“They (PMG) told us that the company is terminating the contract with immediate effect. Shayad kuch Lodha Committee ka panga hua hai. (Perhaps, because of the trouble with Lodha committee reforms). We did not ask anything further and signed the documents,” said Naushad Khan.
