Team India has struggled a bit with their middle order combination in the recent past. They are finding it hard to get it right in the shorter formats of the game. Sometimes it is Hardik Pandya above Kedar Jadhav, Manish Pandey and MS Dhoni or it is Dhoni above the rest. Even if the line-up is changed according to the situation the runs are missing. Ajinkya Rahane who was tipped to handle the middle order has shown that he is better off playing as an opener.

Jadhav, Pandya, and Dhoni have shuffled through all the positions in the middle order and the lower middle order. They have been brilliant in some matches but “some” is not enough for a team like India. That said, one of the Indian legends suggested that it is time to get the veterans in the action again. Sunil Gavaskar thinks that Indian selectors need to revisit some of their older options and that might sort things out.

Get some left-handers in

Gavaskar was talking in match show of the 3rd T20I when he pinpointed the problem the team has. He also provided a possible solution and said that India needs to bring back Suresh Raina and Yuvraj Singh. His point was that India is low on left-handed batsmen.

He said that the Men in Blue have only Shikhar Dhawan who opens the batting and then there are all right-handers. He had a valid point there and having a left and right-hand combination at the crease always helps.

Gavaskar said, “When you are looking at the middle muddle (India’s middle order), India should be looking at a left-hander. There is nobody (no left-hander) apart from Shikhar Dhawan, nobody else in the middle order. Maybe whether you are looking at Suresh Raina or Yuvraj Singh who can come in and bowl the odd over…..I know these are temporary measures, but I think you have got to look at someone, who can bat left-handed.”
