Team India registered a narrow win in the final game of their tour of South Africa. The 7-wicket win in the Cape Town T20I gave the visitors a 2-1 series win. Certainly, the tour was a very productive one for the Indian side as they won both the limited overs series. While the players, and everybody else in the Indian camp enjoyed great success, veteran commentator Sunil Gavaskar had a troubled time on the tour.
The former Indian cricketer found himself in awkward positions on multiple occasions during the course of the tour. In one of the matches, Sunil Gavaskar was heard goofing up big time with the stats related to Virat Kohli. Trying to draw similarities between Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli, Gavaskar ended up saying that both cricketers scored their maiden ODI tons after playing 100 ODIs.
This, in all means, was a major goof up considering the fact that Kohli had hit his maiden ton at an early stage in his career. Later, during the T20I series, Gavaskar used a very crass remark to describe Jaydev Unadkat’s place in the Indian team. His so called intended humor was very distasteful considering the fact that it was made in front of the global audience.
And now, during the final match of the tour, Sunil Gavaskar ticked the box of the commentators curse as well. Veteran Indian batsman Suresh Raina was looking in sublime form for his 26-ball 43. Just when he was scoring runs freely, Gavaskar was heard passing a remark in the commentary box. On the very next delivery, Tabraiz Shamsi flighted one in the air and Raina ended up chipping it high in to the hands of the long on fielder.
“If I hit, great. If I don’t, if I mistime (the ball) so be it. There are still 8 wickets to come after this wicket is gone,” Sunil Gavaskar was heard chirping in the commentary box just before Suresh Raina got out in the final T20I in Cape Town.
