The Central Stags began the tournament with a clinical win over the defending champions Northern Knights and will now face the Auckland Aces in their second game. The Auckland team is bolstered by the presence of New Zealand’s star International players. Martin Guptill will be back in action in this game after nursing a calf injury. He is expected to open the innings for the Auckland Aces along with Colin Munro. The Aces’ first match against Wellington Firebirds turned out to be a washout.

Both Munro and Guptill are coming on the back of fifties against the Hobart Hurricanes in the warm-up game. Adding to this duo, the Aces also have the services of Glenn Phillips, Mark Chapman and Lockie Ferguson before the start of the limited-overs leg against Sri Lanka. The Central Stags will be hoping to get a consistent contribution from the top order batsmen which was missing in the game against the Knights. Their skipper Tom Bruce played the main role in the team’s victory in that game.

There will be no official broadcast for this match due to the ongoing New Zealand-Sri Lanka Test match.

Pitch Condition/Report:

Three of the four completed Twenty20 matches hosted by the Pukekura Park since the start of 2017 have witnessed 170+ totals for the teams batting first. In these four matches, the chasing sides won two and lost two.

Probable XI:

Central Stags:

Tom Bruce (C), George Worker, Will Young, Doug Bracewell, Josh Clarkson, Dane Cleaver (WK), Kieran Noema-Barnett, Seth Rance, Blair Tickner, Ben Wheeler, Felix Murray.

Auckland Aces:

Craig Cachopa (C), Martin Guptill, Colin Munro, Glenn Phillips (WK), Mark Chapman, Robbie O’Donnell, Lockie Ferguson, Donovan Grobbelaar, Roneel Hira, Ben Lister, Will Somerville/Matthew Quinn.

Power Picks:

Glenn Phillips failed to make big scores recently after having impressed one and all by finishing as the 2nd leading run-getter in the 2018 CPL only behind his country-man Colin Munro. Philips struck a fifty in the warm-up game against Hobart Hurricanes which will boost his confidence.

Robbie O’Donnell has the role of anchoring the innings in the team like Auckland Aces that is filled with big hitting batsmen. Robbie ensures he stays at the crease throughout which comes handy in collapses. The South Africa-born batsman has 442 runs in his Twenty20 career at a record average of 73.66.

Captain and Vice-Captain Selection:

Munro’s ability to chip in with a couple of overs with the ball makes him an ideal choice for captain while Guptill being the vice-captain. Alternative options for these roles will be George Worker and Will Young who are as crucial to the Stags as the International duo to the Aces.

Best Playing XI:

Dane Cleaver, Will Young, Martin Guptill, Colin Munro, Tom Bruce, George Worker, Doug Bracewell, Donovan Grobbelaar, Seth Rance, Blair Tickner, Lockie Ferguson.

Risky Playing XI:

Glenn Phillips, Will Young, Martin Guptill, Colin Munro, Robbie O’Donnell, George Worker, Donovan Grobbelaar, Roneel Hira, Seth Rance, Blair Tickner, Lockie Ferguson.

Expert Advice:

With Colin Munro, Martin Guptill and few other high priced players, a gamble can be taken to leave out Phillips. With Munro and Guptill opening, leaving out Phillips for the Stags’ opener Dane Cleaver won’t be a bad idea.

Probable Winners:

Auckland Aces are expected to get off the mark straightaway by handing the Central Stags their first defeat.
