In the last decade or so, Indian Cricket has made a paradigm shift in their fielding skills and have been able to take it to a higher echelon. At a time when Australia and South Africa had set high fielding standards, India was still in the ‘passenger’ seat. It was Indian batting all-rounder, Robin Singh who set the benchmark with his fielding efforts and helped India set the tone.

Robin Singh has served Indian Cricket for long and believes that present Indian cricketers have the ability to shine brighter and do what Aussies did a decade back. Speaking to Khaleej Times, Robin said India has produced some emphatic players but likes of Suresh Raina and Ravindra Jadeja stands out for the 54-year old.

Jadeja the best fielder: Robin Singh

“There are a lot of good fielders but I think there are a few fielders who probably excel. I think Suresh Raina is one of them but he’s not in the side at the moment,” he said.

“Of course, (Ravindra) Jadeja is probably the best fielder in India today. He’s quick; he’s got a good throw. Maybe one of the areas they (India) can really improve on is probably hitting the stumps a little more and make a wicket happen. I don’t see that happening too much but as a fielding team, they have definitely improved big time,” he said.

Robin shares his insights on fielding

Sharing his experience, Robin said, he looked to stop every ball. He believes that if an individual wish to be a great fielder, he should be aware of the situation.

“You need to be ready for the ball. Sometimes, it comes to you, sometimes it comes very often, sometimes it may not come, but the idea is to be switched on all the time. You don’t have to switch on for the full six hours; it is only for a fraction of a second, two seconds or three seconds.”

It is about knowing when to concentrate. So, these things are important and these are the small things that help you like awareness of what the bowler is bowling and what the batsman is capable of doing. If you can put that together, then fielding is easy,” he explained.
