Sussex sneaked past the home team Glamorgan in the 2nd Division County Championship game by a narrow 1-wicket margin to climb up to the 2nd spot in the points table. An unbeaten 32-run stand between Oliver Robinson and Danny Briggs took Sussex to the winning coast in their 209-run chase handing them 21 points at the Colwyn Bay.

Sussex, who elected to bowl first without a toss, had the home side six down for 148 runs with only Nicholas Selman (56) and Kiran Carlson (47) getting runs among the top order. However, a 108-run stand for the 7th wicket between Craig Meschede and Thomas Cullen pushed Glamorgan to 294. Meschede top scored with a 96-ball 87 while Cullen made 42 runs before Robinson wrapped up the innings with a 4-wicket haul.

Just like the Glamorgan, Sussex too struggled in their first innings with the bat to get going as Meschede picked up four wickets to bowl out the visitors for 268 and bag a 26-run first inning lead. The Sussex captain Ben Brown top scored for his side with 77 before getting out as the last wicket.

Jordan picks a fifer

Chris Jordan’s 5-wicket haul bowled out the Glamorgan to 182 in the 2nd innings, who secured a lead of 208 runs. Sussex lost the wicket of Luke Wells on the very first ball but the 90-run 3rd wicket stand between Chris Nash (68) and Stiaan van Zyl (38) and a 55-run stand for the 5th wicket between Nash and Ben Brown (37) took them towards the target. However, the home side returned well to reduce Sussex from 155/4 to 179/9 with 30 runs still to be scored.

Robinson, who had a good game with the ball taking seven wickets, held his nerves along with Briggs to hand them a thrilling win. Robinson struck a six when they needed 14 runs and finished with another maximum when they were four away from the target.

This is Sussex’s second 1-wicket victory in three years in the County Championship, as they defeated Warwickshire as well by one wicket in 2015. Glamorgan, on the other hand, recorded their narrowest defeat in the County since the 1-wicket loss against Gloucestershire way back in 1973.

Brief scores:

Glamorgan 1st innings: 294/10 (Craig Meschede 87; Oliver Robinson 4/46)

Sussex 1st innings: 268/10 (Ben Brown 77; Craig Meschede 4/61)

Sussex 2nd innings: 211/9 (Chris Nash 68, Oliver Robinson 41*; Lukas Carey 3/40)
