For many years, Indian cricket team did not have to worry about a wicket-keeper because of the ominous presence of a certain Mahendra Singh Dhoni. While Dhoni, amidst numerous criticisms, manages to do impressive glovework for Virat Kohli’s men in limited overs, his services are no longer available in Tests. In Wriddhiman Saha’s absence, national team selectors have opted for a ‘makeshift keeper’ policy which has miffed former Indian wicket-keeper Syed Kirmani.

In Virat Kohli’s Indian Test team, West Bengal lad Wriddhiman Saha is the wicket-keeping mainstay. Though he is not particularly impressive with the bat, he manages to get into the team with his impeccable keeping skills. Unfortunately for India, injury has ruled him out of the upcoming five-match Test series against England. Following that, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has picked veteran Dinesh Karthik and youngster Rishabh Pant in the team.

Kirmani calls selection team “inexperienced”

India is in the search of a perfect backup for Saha, as Parthiv Patel’s poor string of performances have led to his axing from the team. Syed Kirmani, who has played 88 Tests for the nation, feels that the selectors’ way of making batters ‘makeshift keepers’ highlights their inexperienced, and also feels the selectors need to invest more trust on the men they are selecting.

“You miss out on one or two innings and you are out of the team. They are making all batsmen makeshift wicketkeepers. Unfortunately, that is how the selection team is thinking. It reflects on their inexperience,” the 68-year-old from Chennai said, as per reports in Cricket Addictor. After two weeks and a half, India will face England for the first Test at the home of cricket, Lord’s Cricket Ground.

Indian Test squad: Virat Kohli (c), Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul, Murali Vijay, Cheteshwar Pujara, Ajinkya Rahane (vc), Karun Nair, Dinesh Karthik (wk), Rishabh Pant (wk), R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Ishant Sharma, Mohammed Shami, Umesh Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Shardul Thakur
