The 9th edition of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy kicked off today and at the end of the first day, we have completed 6 matches. The day began with an impressive win for Assam against Ranji Semi-finalists Jharkhand. Before the match, Jharkhand would have been the overwhelming favourites but Assam put up a spirited bowling performance to restrict them to 133 in their allotted 20 overs. Riding on a fluent half-century from Amit Verma, Assam reached the target with 9 balls to spare.

In the 2nd match of the day, Madhya Pradesh prevailed in a nail-biting thriller against Railways. Batting first Railways posted a moderate 155 on the board on the back of a fluent half-century by Mahesh Rawat. Although Madhya Pradesh stuttered in their middle overs but a solid opening partnership ensured they reached the target with a ball remaining.

Kerala defeated Andhra Pradesh by 21 runs in the 3rd match of the day. Riding on a beautiful half-century by opener Vishnu Vinod, Kerala posted a more than competitive 175 on the board. Ricky Bhui made a valiant effort with 36 balls 48 for Andhra but it wasn’t enough to get them over the finishing line. Basil Thampi was exceptional with the ball in hand, finishing with impressive figures of 3/18 in his allotted 4 overs.

While Hyderabad defeated Goa by 51 runs, Services defeated Himachal Pradesh by 4 wickets. While Tanmay Agarwal was the star for Hyderabad, Amit Pachhara was the match winner for Services staying unbeaten on 48. Ajinkya Rahane and Captain Aditya Tare scored 79 and 78 respectively for Mumbai to take them to 211 in their allotted 20 overs. Baroda was in the game for the majority of the match but eventually fell agonisingly close to the total. Vishnu Solanki’s unbeaten 69 of 34 balls went in vain as Mumbai began their Syed Mushtaq Ali campaign with a nerve-wracking victory.

Delhi defeated Jammu and Kashmir convincingly by 8 wickets, while Odisha defeated Tripura by 10 runs in a low-scoring encounter at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
