Rashid Khan, the Afghanistan cricketer, is known more for his bowling than his batting. However, on Tuesday, during Sussex’s T20 Blast 2021 quarterfinal clash against Yorkshire, Rashid showed his class with the willow in hand. The right-hander stayed unbeaten on 27 off nine with the help of three fours and two sixes, guiding his team to a five-wicket win.

In the meantime, one of his sixes last night, caught the limelight. In the second ball of the 18th over during Sussex’s run-chase, he played an outrageous Helicopter shot. Right-arm fast bowler Jordan Thompson bowled a full-pitched delivery on and around the off-stump.

Rashid shimmied down the track and whipped the ball downtown for a massive six. The ball went miles into the air and landed beyond the boundary. Needless to say, that the fielders on the park were mere spectators.

Luke Wright lauds Rashid Khan

With his team needing 22 runs off 12 balls, Rashid smashed David Willey for three fours in a row and brought the target down to a run-a-ball. Chris Jordan’s boundary off Matthew Fisher helped Sussex chase down 178 with two balls to spare.

Rashid played the game amidst his home country being in tatters due to political turmoil. The youngster has raised his voice plenty of times asking the who’s and who of world leaders to stop the bloodshed in Afghanistan.

In the meantime, Rashid conjured praises from Sussex skipper Luke Wright for showing character in tough times. Wright was amazed at Rashid’s conduct in the tumultuous times.

“Rash has always been great for Sussex in terms of wanting to play. He could have easily not pitched up here for us and gone back with everything going on but he’s a credit to himself and is such an impressive guy. The way he has handled himself is unbelievable,” Wright had said.

“I couldn’t even imagine what it must be like for him, having his family back [in Afghanistan]. I’ve played with the odd overseas player around the world who can park it off a little bit at times but Rash is all-in. He gives his all for every team he plays for,” he added.
