South Africa started their T20 World Cup campaign with a hefty loss at the hands of Australia. But Temba Bavuma and Co. showed a great amount of resilience and defeated the West Indies by eight wickets on Tuesday at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. As far as the Caribbean unit is concerned, their WC sojourn is in the doldrums as they keep languishing at the bottom of the table.

Evin Lewis stars for West Indies

After winning the toss and electing to field first, South Africa restricted West Indies to 143 for eight in their 20 overs. West Indies got off to a decent start after Lendl Simmons and Evin Lewis stitched together an opening wicket partnership of 73 runs off 63 balls. But while Lewis was fluent, Simmons couldn’t get going. The latter scored 16 at a strike rate of 45.71 before Kagiso Rabada castled him.

Lewis went on to score 56 off 35 with the help of three fours and six sixes. But the rest of the batting failed to step on the gas. Kieron Pollard scored 26 off 20 with two fours and a six. Andre Russell, Shimron Hetmyer, Chris Gayle, and Nicholas Pooran flattered to deceive. For the Proteas, Dwayne Bravo picked up four wickets. Keshav Maharaj got two wickets, but Tabraiz Shamsi faltered.

Aiden Markram leads the charge

South Africa got off to a horrendous start as their skipper, Temba Bavuma, perished in the very first over. Andre Russell threw down the stumps at the non-striker’s end to cut short Bavuma’s stay in the middle. However, Reeza Hendricks, who replaced Quinton de Kock in the playing eleven, and Rassie van der Dussen steadied the ship for the Proteas. The duo put on 67 runs for the second wicket.

Akeal Hosein separated the duo after he pinned Hendricks, who scored a 30-ball 39, laced with four fours and one six. Thereafter, Van der Dussen joined hands with Aiden Markram and put on an unbeaten 83-run stand for the third wicket. Markram took the aggressive route as he stayed not out on 51 off 26 with two fours and four sixes. Van der Dussen scored 43 runs and showed his class.
