Match No.25 between South Africa and Sri Lanka on Saturday turned out to be a closely-fought affair. The game went right down to the last over with both teams having equal chances to get over the line. In the end, the Proteas won by four wickets with one ball to spare. The Lankans have now lost two games in a row and are in dire straits. South Africa have won back-to-back games now.

Pathum Nissanka guides Lanka

After electing to field first, the Proteas did an excellent job as Lanka could only manage 142. Opening batter Pathum Nissanka was the star of the show as he scored 72 off 58 balls and batted until the penultimate over of the innings. His knock was laced with six fours and three sixes. Apart from him, Charith Asalanka looked good, having scored 21 runs off 14 balls with two fours and one six.

Kusal Perera, Bhanuka Rajapaksha, Avishka Fernando and Wanindu Hasaranga got into double digits, but failed to convert. Dasun Shanaka scored 11, but wasn’t able to carry on. For South Africa, Tabraiz Shamsi and Dwaine Pretorius did exceptionally, picking up three wickets apiece. Shamsi bowled at an economy rate of 4.25. Anrich Nortje also accounted for two scalps and was economical as well.

Bavuma, Miller take South Africa home

The Proteas made a steady start to their run-chase as they scored 40 runs in the powerplay, but lost both their openers- Quinton de Kock and Reeza Hendricks. Rassie van der Dussen looked good in his 11-ball 16 before Shanaka ran him out. The onus was then on skipper Temba Bavuma and the in-form Aiden Markram to steady the ship. Markram played an excellent knock against the West Indies.

Markram scored runs 19 at a bit under a run-a-ball, but Hasaranga sent him back in the 15th over. Bavuma looked good for his run-a-ball 46 before he became Hasaranga’s second victim. In the last over with South Africa needing 15 runs to win, David Miller smashed Lahiru Kumara for back-to-back sixes. In the end, Kagiso Rabada hit Kumara for a four to take the Proteas over the line.
