Wasim Jaffer’s witty and humorous side was again on display when he pulled his England counterpart Kevin Pietersen’s leg over his tweet from earlier this month.
Pietersen stated rather confidently that the two teams who can defeat England are only Pakistan and Afghanistan, and that too if the game is played on a used wicket in Sharjah. However, that prediction turned false when Kane Williamson-led New Zealand knocked out England by defeating them in the first semi-final of the ongoing T20 World Cup.
“Only Pakistan or Afghanistan can beat England in this T20 World Cup. BUT and it’s a BIG BUT, the game would have to be played on a used wicket in Sharjah. Anywhere else, just hand England the trophy like Chelsea should be handed the EPL trophy RIGHT NOW!,” read Pietersen’s tweet from November 2.
In response, Jaffer posted a picture of Kane Williamson, with a caption “Haa, hum to yaha bass Burj Khalifa dekhne aaye hai.” (“Yeah, because we have just come to see the Burj Khalifa”)

New Zealand recorded a sensational victory against England in Abu Dhabi on November 10 to make it to their maiden T20 World Cup final. Chasing 167, they were behind for the larger part of the chase, only for Daryl Mitchell’s unbeaten 72 off 47 and James Neesham’s aggressive 11-ball 27-run cameo to turn the fortunes around dramatically.
Lauding Mitchell’s effort, skipper Williamson said post-match: “Definitely something that stood out today (Mitchell’s character). Has batted beautifully in a high-pressure situation. T20 cricket – it’s a game of small margins. Depending on the surface, the short side – these things can be match-defining. He came out and hit the ball hard, that’s what he does (Neesham). Changed the momentum really.”
“Fantastic knock from Daryll, hit the big shots when it counted. We’ll be following that match – going to be fantastic. We know we have another challenge coming up and we’ll change our focus after tonight,” he added.
Mitchell, who deservedly won the Player of the Match award, said: It was a bit of a whirl at the end there. I couldn’t remember what was going on, but I’m happy I got the job done. It was a challenging surface, with the new ball, and it was two-paced. The way Conway set the platform and Neesh hit a few out of the ground was amazing. We knew one or two good overs would do it, and we got the momentum back thanks to Neesham’s hitting.”
