The Indian men’s cricket team became the first-ever side to compete in 1000 ODI matches when they took the field against West Indies in the first of the three-match ODI series on February 6, 2022, at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. An easy win by six wickets meant the Men in Blue marked the 1000th ODI appearance in style. Rohit Sharma began his tenure as a full-time 50-overs skipper and led his team well as he is now India’s captain in all three formats.

ODI format came into the picture in January 1971 when Australia and England faced off each other but the Indian team played their maiden match on July 13, 1974, against England in Leeds. Since then the Asian giants have been the second most successful side in this format as they have tasted success on 519 occasions out of the 1000 matches played. 431 times they ended up on the losing side with nine clashes resulting in a tie. India’s 41 ODIs had no result as only Australia is ahead of them in terms of victories. The team from down under has 581 wins under their belt.

In India’s 100th ODI Kapil Dev was the skipper when the team met Australia in 1986. Mohammad Azharuddin led the side in 200th and 400th ODI against Australia and Kenya respectively. Legendary batter Sachin Tendulkar was the leader when India squared off with South Africa in their 300th match in 1996. The landmark 500th game ended in no result when Sourav Ganguly captained the sub-continent side against England in the year 2002. In 2005, team India appeared in their 600th ODI when they locked horns with Sri Lanka in Rajkot under the leadership of Virender Sehwag.

MS Dhoni was the captain in the 700th, 800th, and 900th ODI

India’s most successful skipper of all time, Mahendra Singh Dhoni led the team in the 700th match against England in Bangalore in 2008. The clash became more special as the team managed to clinch victory by 19 runs against the English side. 80th ODI was against Australia in 2012 down under and it wasn’t a game to remember as MS Dhoni’s India lost the match by 87 runs. The picturesque Dharamsala stadium in Himachal Pradesh hosted the 900th ODI against New Zealand where the men in blue defeated the Kiwis by six wickets.

The Indian team has come a long way in the ODI format as they first lifted their maiden World cup trophy in the year 1983 by defeating West Indies at the iconic Lords stadium under the leadership of legendary Kapil Dev and it still gives goosebumps to all the Indian cricket team fans. In 2002, Sourav Ganguly guided India to a Champions trophy win, though the title was shared with Sri Lanka due to two finals ending in no results because of rain.

After 28 years, that dream moment finally arrived when the team won their second ODI World Cup in 2011. India beat Sri Lanka at the Wankhede Stadium in the final in Mumbai with MS Dhoni being the skipper. Two years later, India won their second Champions Trophy title by clinching victory over the hosts England in the final in 2013. Certainly, Team India has been one of the most successful sides in ODI history with four major trophies to their name.
