After the Pakistan Cricket Board decided to not include Shahid Afridi for the Pakistan T20 series, the boom-boom man announced his retirement from international cricket. With that ended a stellar career with spanned across 20 years, and created many records.

Afridi announced himself into the international scene in 1996, in a four national series between South Africa, Kenya, Nairobi and Sri Lanka. Although he did not get a chance to make his debut in the first game of the series, he registered a century in the second game as an opener, off only 37 balls. With this, he set the record for the quickest ton in ODI cricket, until in 2014 Corey Anderson broke the record with 36 balls.

He ended his international career with 27 Test matches in which he scored 1,176 runs with a highest of 156 and 48 wickets. In one-day internationals, he featured in 398 games, with a total of 8,064 runs, highest 124 and 395 wickets.

He played 98 games in the shortest format of the game, taking 97 wickets and scoring 1405 runs. His records speak for the type of batsman he was, a complete match-winner.

Fans knew the hitting prowess Afridi possessed, and for his huge, out of the park sixes, he came to be known as ‘Boom Boom Afridi’. Afridi produced several stellar performances against India too and had a friendly relation with Indian cricketers. The Indian team acknowledged Afridi’s contributions to cricket, and the excitement he brought to the India Vs Pakistan games and thus gifted him a Team India T-shirt which features the signature of all the current Team members, Captain Kohli included.

Kohli added a personalized message below his sign which read “Always a pleasure playing against you!!”

This was a very sweet gesture by the Indian team and goes on to prove that the rivalry between India and Pakistan, in cricket, is limited to the 22 yards only.
