The 2019 World Cup semi-final was heartbreaking for every Indian fan. After watching the Indian team sail through to the knockout stages, it was quite disappointing to lose out an opportunity to be in the final.
During an Instagram live session between Suresh Raina and Rohit Sharma, the latter revealed how it felt. The Indian opener also said that he is optimistic that the team would do better in the upcoming World Cups. Recalling the upset of the semi-final, Raina revealed that the opener looked extremely sad after the defeat.
“I saw your face you were so sad. The way you were playing, it wasn’t easy to score those hundreds in a World Cup. It was heartbreaking for the Indian fans”, the CSK batsman said. The right-handed batsman had scored five centuries in the 2019 World Cup, most by any batsman in a single edition.
Rohit Sharma reflected on India’s loss in the 2019 World Cup
Talking about the disappointment, the Mumbai batsman said that feeling of winning a World Cup is something different. He said winning a World Cup doubles your happiness and hence the disappointment is also quite a lot. He correctly said that there a lot of emotions attached to a World Cup.
“It was heartbreaking because there is no better feeling than winning a World Cup. It’s never easy to defeat six teams and lift the trophy by winning the final. There’s a unique feeling of winning the World Cup. You might win or lose bi-lateral series but when you win a World Cup, you feel double happy.”
“Likewise, when you lose, it’s equally disappointing. This is the reason why there are so many emotions attached when you talk about the World Cup,” Rohit, who was the part of 2007 T20 World Cup-winning side, said.
During his chat with Raina, Rohit quite confident of achieving the goal of winning a World Cup in the near future. He explained that India should at least win two of the three World Cups in the near future as they have a great team.
“We have the opportunity as there are three World Cups in the near future – two T20 World Cups and one 50-over World Cup. I have said it much time, we should at least win two of those. There will be no complaints if we win all three, but two we should win as we have a good team,” Rohit said.
The 2020 T20 World Cup is scheduled to happen in Australia in October this year. However, the coronavirus pandemic might just push the tournament to the upcoming year. In 2021, India is set to host another Men’s T20 World Cup. Two years from then, India will once again get ready to host the 50-overs World Cup in 2023.
