The Indian team is all set to take on New Zealand in the first T20I of the three-match T20I series in Jaipur. While India is coming out of a dismal T20 WC campaign, Kiwis made a mark by reaching the final of the mega event. It is known for all that some changes have taken up in the setup as Rohit Sharma has taken over the T20I captaincy from Virat Kohli.
On the other hand, Rahul Dravid will be seen taking up the head coach duties from this very series. In the same line of events, many former Indian cricketers opened up on their thoughts of Rahul and Rohit taking up India’s charge. Former legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar stated how he believes in Dravid with the new role.
“When he used to play we used to think that till Rahul Dravid is at the crease, the Indian batting is safe and strong. This is the reason why I believe that the new responsibility of head coach that falls upon him, he will be able to handle it in a similar way,” said Sunil Gavaskar on Rahul Dravid taking up India’s head coach role on Star Sports show Follow the Blues.
“He was a very successful player then he became a very successful captain and I’m sure he is going to become a very successful coach as well. With him in that dressing room, I think he brings a lot of assurance, he’s played more than 100 test matches. He’s captained the side, his work ethics were unbelievable, really hard working. So, I think he brings a lot on the table,” said Gambhir.
Going further into the discussion, former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra stated that when people think of Dravid, words like meticulous, raw, planning, and execution come to their minds. Also, the current coach doesn’t mind losing small battles as he keeps his eyes on big goals, reckoned Chopra.
Rohit Sharma will have to lead by example: Aakash Chopra
“When you think of Rahul Dravid, the first thing that comes to my mind is process – process, planning, execution of that planning, raw, meticulous, looking forward, looking ahead. He doesn’t mind losing those small battles, as aims to win the war entirely. So, this war-winning mentality and attitude will come with his leadership, along with some amount of stability,” said Chopra on the same aspect.
Gavaskar also talked on the aspect that how Rahul and Rohit are similar are in their temperaments. Both are quiet and this is how they will understand each other well. Chopra concluded by adding that both Rohit and Rahul will redefine the way India takes it white-ball cricket.
“If you look at both of their temperaments, they are quite similar. Rohit is of a quiet nature just like Rahul Dravid. So, I think their bond will be quite good because both of them will understand each other well,” said Gavaskar while drawing parallels between Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid.
“He needs to define the future strategy of playing white-ball cricket because there is a requirement to redefine the way we play white-ball cricket and for that Rohit Sharma will have to be the leader and he’ll have to lead by example,” Chopra concluded.
