The ten team World Cup format is a pity, reckons this legendary cricketer

Former Zimbabwean cricketer Heath Streak is all set to join the Kolkata Knight Riders roster this season. The former cricketer recently spoke about the various propositions that the KKR franchise will be looking forward to in the upcoming edition of the popular T20 league. Furthermore, he also gave his opinions on the ongoing ICC World Cup Qualifiers in Zimbabwe.

Heath Streak, who will be heading the bowling duties in the KKR camp, expressed his excitement on the young recruits like Kamlesh Nagarkoti and Shivam Mavi in the IPL. He noted that he has been following their game very closely. Also, he looked delighted to work with the Australian speedster Mitchell Starc. Streak believes it will be a great learning curve for the young cricketers.

Recently, the KKR camp announced their captain for the upcoming season. They named Dinesh Karthik as the new captain. Commenting on DK’s appointment, Heath Streak hailed it as a very good move. For the last two seasons, both DK and Streak were in the Gujarat Lions camp.

“DK is playing exceptionally good cricket. He is in a very good and confident form at the moment. So, I think it is an excellent decision. He’s the kind of a guy who gets along well with everyone. He is very well-spoken and is very astute as a cricketer. So, I’m sure he’ll do a good job for KKR and will lead the team with really good experience,” Heath Streak quoted.

On the current World Cup format

Currently, the World Cup format for the 2019 edition of the tournament is quite bizarre. Only 8 teams have qualified for the tournament and the other top 10 sides are toiling hard to fill up the remaining two slots. Windies have already bagged one of them. Heath Streak condemned this format of Qualifiers and reckons it is unfair on the lower ranked sides because they can be better than what the rankings suggest.

“The 10-team World Cup is a pity. Irrespective of who qualifies, there will be 4 or 5 teams who will be very competitive in a World Cup. That’s what the World Cup is about, seeing how the new teams feature against the best teams in the world. I think cricket should be growing as a sport. There are more and more competitive sides. Teams which once used to be associates are now getting full international status. It (format of the World Cup) should have stayed the same, or at least a 12-team tournament,” conceded the former cricketer.
