After Rohit Sharma, it’s the turn for Shikhar Dhawan. The left-hand opening batsman, who won the Man of the Series award in the recently held Asia Cup, was ignored for the two-Test series against the Windies at home and if reports are to be believed, this could be the end of the road for the 32-year-old. However, for another opener Murali Vijay, the door is still open.

Dhawan, who has played 34 Tests since 2013, has averaged over 44 at home which is more than his career average of 40.61. Overseas, his average goes down below 40 and though he has scored five out of his seven Test tons away from home, only one has come outside the subcontinent (115 vs New Zealand in 2014).

Vijay has hundreds in England, Australia

Vijay, on the other hand, averages less than Dhawan in 59 Tests (39.32) and even less overseas (32.23). Moreover, he has scored just three Test hundreds abroad. Yet, the fact that he has scored two centuries outside the subcontinent could see him getting a lifeline in the future. Vijay scored a 146 and 144 in England and Australia in 2014 besides scoring a few 90s in South Africa, England, and Australia. Dhawan, on the other hand, has one 90 (vs NZ) outside the subcontinent.

According to a Times of India (TOI) report, Dhawan has been communicated to by the team management that he is unlikely to be considered in Tests from now on. However, on Vijay, who lost his place in the Test team after a poor run in England (26 runs in four innings), the management is still interested to have him for it thinks that he has better numbers when playing outside the sub-continent.

“After Vijay failed in the second Test, Dhawan was told that he was going to get a free hand in the rest of the three Tests as the team management and selectors believed he could be an asset up the order as he could dominate any attack. But he was also told that if he couldn’t perform, then a call would be taken on his Test future,” a source mentioned.

Shikhar Dhawan has been picked in the Test side on and off owing to his inconsistent performance of late but now, one can say that his Test career has virtually met an end.
