Former cricketer Jamie Mitchell, who represented Australia in the U-19 stages, has recently revealed the abuse he had undergone during the 1985 tour to India and Sri Lanka. In addition to it, he has been preparing the questions to ask Cricket Australia so that he gets completely answered. He has requested to take down the medical records of the 1985 tour which might, in fact, reveal a lot of what had happened actually.
The England Cricket Board (ECB) in the last few months has taken a lot of action after the incidents of racial abuse in the Yorkshire County Club. Definitely, the urge to look up to any kind of abuse has been followed strictly and the Cricket Australia (CA) will be looking forward to handling this as well.
Mitchell had to reveal the impact of the abuse through his lawyer Michael Magazanik after he had made the allegations to ABC Sport on Monday.
Jamie Mitchell to send a list of questions to Cricket Australia
Jamie Mitchell mentioned that he had to undergo a lot throughout these years mentally and was finally relieved by the fact that he had opened up on the media. He also saw this as an opportunity for Cricket Australia to showcase their actions against abuse of this kind. He noted about sending a list of questions to Cricket Australia and expected them to take serious actions.
“I’m relieved that, finally, there’s some scrutiny of that 1985 tour. Instead of being a highlight of my cricketing life, that tour has caused me trauma and distress over many years. Cricket Australia has a chance to distinguish itself by facing up to this issue and doing the right thing. And that means transparency, starting with proper answers to many questions. I’m going to send a list of them to Cricket Australia.”
“My focus is on getting answers and on player welfare. I’m expecting Cricket Australia to take this very seriously.” Mr. Mitchell spoke to ABC Sport media through his lawyer.
Nick Hockley responds to allegations
Meanwhile, Nick Hockley, Cricket Australia chairman, had responded to the allegations and reckoned that the abuse should not be tolerated at any cost. He assured of actions to be taken once the investigations are completed accordingly. He finally was delighted to see the courage of Jamie Mitchell to open up on the abuse.
“We are completely committed to ensuring our organization and sport provide an inclusive, safe and supportive culture for everyone. We have no tolerance for any form of abuse. I wish to acknowledge the courage of Jamie Mitchell in bringing these allegations to our attention.”
“We are assisting the police in their investigation and wish to support Mr. Mitchell in any way we can. I would like to acknowledge all survivors of abuse and commend their courage,” Hockley told in response to the story.
