'That's always something that could be looked at' - George Bailey suggests split coaching for Australia in near future

The Cricket Australia chief selector George Bailey has asserted that appointing split coaches for specific formats is something that can be considered in the near future. According to him with time the demand to adapt to different versions of the game increases and, in this case, split coaching can chip in better results.

The current coach Justin Langer’s contract with the side expires in June 2022. However, the former Australian player has expressed his interest in continuing the coaching job. But with his contract expiring soon, the discussions of coaching are likely to come into the limelight.

Bailey feels that different formats come with varied challenges. He also shed light on the quarantine situations and pointed that split coaching can help the side to achieve consistent success.

“I think that’s always something that could be looked at. Depending on who the coach is, who the captain is, what your sort of mix is across teams of how many players go across formats. How busy the schedules are, what World Cups are coming up? All of those things provide different challenges. But I do think we’re heading down … the sacrifices made with quarantine and on top of time away have got to be acknowledged,” George Bailey told Perth Now.

Australia is expected to tour Pakistan and New Zealand simultaneously in March-April. They are scheduled to play the Test series against Pakistan and three T20Is against the Kiwis. Though Australia lifted their maiden T20 World Cup this year, coach Langer has been placed under major scrutiny for his coaching in white-ball cricket.

However, Langer had earlier asserted that he enjoys his job and wishes to continue serving the team. He also said that the team has been doing well and he thus aims to lead them to more success.

“I have never thought differently, to be honest. I have been consistent with what I have said for the last four years. I love my job. The boys are playing well, no doubt about it, it’s a great team to be involved in. So, nothing has changed from my point of view,” Justin Langer said, as quoted by Sydney Morning Herald.
