The Premier of Western Australia, Mark McGowan has stated that there will be ‘tough rules’ in place as all the Ashes bound players will have to undergo a mandatory quarantine of 14 days. Also, the families of the players will not be allowed to travel with the team as well.

The city of Perth will play host to the 5th and final Test match of The Ashes. The emergence of the new Covid-19 variant Omicron is the reason behind McGowan imposing these strict measures ahead of The Ashes.

Also, the entire broadcasting team that is covering The Ashes series will also need to self-isolate as well. Apart from this, a negative Covid-19 report has to be produced 72 hours before the entire team is flying, and another report needs to be produced 48 hours after entering Perth.

It is up to the players whether they want to adhere to these rules: Mark McGowan

Mark McGowan admitted that there are some very strict rules that are currently put in place at Perth. Adding that the 14-day quarantine is a must for everyone, McGowan also stated that it is up to the players whether they want to follow all these measures. McGowan concluded by stating that the same rules were also in place for the AFL tournament as well.

“We have put in place very strict rules. So we’ve said to them, ‘you need to have 14 days’ quarantine’. And that has to apply to all the broadcast staff, the cricket staff.

They can’t just bring wives and girlfriends with them – same rules as we put in place for the AFL. It’s up to them whether they want to adhere to those rules or not,” said Mark McGowan according to The Daily Mail.

The Ashes will get underway on 8th December 2021, and the 1st rubber of the hugely anticipated series will be played at The Gabba in Brisbane.
