They settled with a washout in their first match of the season against Central Districts even after conceding a big total. With winning margins of 84 runs and 117 runs respectively against Central Districts and Otago, the Canterbury team climbed on to the top and are unbeaten before facing Northern Districts in Christchurch. The Northern Districts team lost their first two matches but bounced back with a comfortable 5-wicket win against Central Districts.
