The first game of the Hundred Men’s tournament 2022 took place between Southern Brave and the Welsh Fire at the Rose Bowl in Southampton. The Hundred tournament was a great success last year for both men and women, is a different format with 100 balls per innings. The Southern Brave emerged victorious in the first game on the back of James Vince’s unbeaten half-century.

Earlier in the game, Southern Brave opted to bowl first after winning the toss and Joe Clarke was dismissed for a four-ball duck. Welsh were struggling at 16 for 3 with the top three batters gone as Craig Overton picked up two in his first spell. Ben Duckett was the only one who got going with the bat for the Welsh side while the wickets kept tumbling around him.

After a 31-ball 40, comprising five fours, Duckett perished with the scoreboard reading 79 for 6, and the lower order needed to step up to post a respectable score. Adam Zampa (10*) and Ryan Higgins (11) tried to stick around for a while and in the end, Welsh finished with 107 for 7 in their innings. Chris Jordan was the pick of the bowlers with 2 for 16 for the Southern Brave.

James Vince tops the run chase with a splendid knock

In reply. the Southern Brave got off to a fine start with the openers, Alex Davies and Vince got going after the bowling. Vince, in particular, played the aggressor role to perfection and brought down the required rate considerably. Davies was removed after a 21-ball 26 while Vince reached a magnificent half-century in quick time.

Vince tried to finish the innings rapidly and remained unbeaten of 71 off 41 balls with eight fours and a six to take his side to a comfortable victory by 9 wickets. The right-hander bagged the player of the match award as the Southern Brave won the game with 30 balls to spare. They will take on Birmingham Pheonix in their next encounter at the Edgbaston on August 10 while Welsh Fire will be up against the Oval Invincibles on August 7 in Cardiff.
