Dinesh Karthik was having lunch with his wife Dipika Pallikal, an ace squash player, and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) CEO Venky Mysore when his father-in-law broke the news of him having made India’s World Cup squad. The 33-year-old wicketkeeper-batsman was having a tough competition from youngster Rishabh Pant over the last few months and was even dropped from the team in India’s last ODI series against Australia in which Pant got a chance.
However, the 21-year-old Pant failed to impress with his glovework and the selection panel, headed by MSK Prasad, said the skill of wicket-keeping was important and it eventually made the verdict go in Karthik’s favour. It’s the second time that he has made a WC squad after 2007 though he is yet to play in a game at the highest stage.
For Karthik, it has not been a rose-laden path for he always had to compete under the shadow of the giant called MS Dhoni, who despite making his international debut after Karthik, went to become a towering figure of Indian cricket, leaving only the second-best position to the likes of Karthik and Parthiv Patel. In a career spanning almost 15 years now, Karthik has played just 91 ODI matches but it’s been his hard work which has seen him surviving all these years.
As per Karthik, his journey towards the 2019 World Cup started when he returned to the Indian squad in 2017. Last year, he hit a last-ball six to give India a T20 trophy in Sri Lanka and has been playing for the national side ever since, especially in the limited-over formats. He has been one of the most effective finishers of the game and can be used as a utility cricketer by the team.
Karthik has also been supportive towards his wife
However, another factor in Karthik’s life that has seen him scale the heights is his wife Dipika, a Commonwealth Games gold winner who he married in August 2015 after getting separated from first wife. Since Dipika herself is also a sportsperson, it became easier for her to understand Karthik and stood by him in tough times. In fact, Karthik has also been a supporting pillar for her wife whenever she aimed to meet high goals in her own field.
The camaraderie between two of the popular sportspersons has given lifegoals to many aspiring lovebirds. Over time being, both of them have been extremely appreciative of each other and the positivity in their relationship has rubbed off on both their careers as well.
Last year on June 1, Dipika posted a special message, saying that DK never misses out on a chance to make her smile. Back on August 20, 2018, the couple celebrated their third marriage anniversary and Pallikal penned down an emotional message for her husband, expressing gratitude for all the love and support. Karthik would now be hoping to punch above his weight in the World Cup.
